Started in 2016 by zero-waste enthusiast Carley Pulford, Zefiro began by selling locally sourced beeswax wraps at Chicago farmer's markets, and quickly grew from there! Where Sustainability Meets Affordability
With thoughtfully designed products made from simple, natural materials like bamboo, boar bristles, and FSC Certified beechwood, Zefiro's products are all made to minimize waste wherever possible. Take their Bamboo Long Handle Brush, for example. With a detachable brush head made from sisal fibers, when your brush head wears down, it's super easy to pop on a new brush head and toss the used one in your compost. No need to throw out the whole brush and no need to create extra waste.
Zefiro works with manufacturing partners in China to make their products, who they carefully vet to ensure transparency and a high level of ethical operations. Plus, their partnership with Chinese manufacturers has a massive eco-friendly side effect! With many of Zefiro's products being made from the sustainability super-wood bamboo, they're able to minimize transportation and the carbon emissions attributed to it by partnering with manufacturers in the bamboo capital of the world.
When it comes to their packaging, Zefiro also eschews traditional expectations – choosing instead to leave their products minimally packaged or with no packaging at all! Zefiro cuts down on the extraneous waste of buying everyday goods, by keeping their products as free from packaging as possible.
Minimizing the amount of waste produced also directly impacts the number of products that need to be purchased too. Simply put, purchasing a zero-waste swap that'll last longer than a hundred of its generic single-use counterparts means you won't have to buy those one hundred items, and they'll never be produced to match demand. But Zefiro goes an extra step here. By making their products as affordable as possible, Zefiro aims to provide everyone the opportunity to make simple, sustainable swaps in their lives. In fact, they even go so far as to equitably price their products with the single-use items they're replacing!
To top it all off, Zefiro is also a fellow 1% For The Planet member, meaning they've pledged to give 1% of all sales, before any expenses, to environmental organizations that are doing good for the Earth.
